Sapphire is a variety of corundum (Al₂O₃), a mineral formed deep within the earth under extremely high pressure and temperature. Corundum in red tones is known as ruby, with the most iconic and noble variety often referred to as pigeon blood ruby. All other colours-blue, green, purple, pink, yellow, white, and everything in between-are classified as sapphires.

In Vietnam, pinkish-purple sapphires and rubies are found mainly in Lục Yên (Yên Bái) and Quỳ Châu (Nghệ An). In particular, Lục Yên is known for deposits where sapphires are found alongside ruby, spinel, tourmaline, and feldspar, making it an especially fascinating source for gemstone lovers. Green, yellow, and blue sapphires are more commonly found in the southern regions of Vietnam, including Bình Thuận, Lâm Đồng, Kon Tum, and Đắk Nông.

For sapphire lovers, understanding your own preferences can make it much easier to find the right source. For example, if you are drawn to pink and purple tones, or to sapphires with silky textures or colour zoning, Lục Yên often offers the widest range of options. If you are looking for larger stones-and sometimes better cuts at a similar price point-then southern sapphires, such as those from Phan Thiết, may be a more suitable choice.
